I had a transmission not up to the task I asked of it. I broke it several times, rebuilding twice until the last time split the case top off. Gears with seperate centers(ex: input to counter) are pushing away from one another when meshed and under torque. The shafts they ride on have to resist this as well as the bearings and the case that hold these shafts in place.

The first two failures I had were simple. I sheared teeth off the input shaft where it constantly meshes with the countershaft. The last failure I never have even looked inside it was so catastrophic.
