So, if the battery wire is unplugged, there still is plenty of voltage to make lots of volts output. The reg will keep upping the field volts, trying to make the alt output 14v. They will usually go to about 30 volts, too much for the internal electronics- diodes and regulator.

Hmmm, probably the main advantage to a one wire alternator. If the output is unhooked from the battery, the regulator will still get it's signal voltage as 14v, direct from, the alternator. Therefore, not keep upping the voltage...
