Mike, as for the cost of my time, yes it is valuable, but in the case of making(he said he could make his own, so I assumed he had the tools needed already and did'nt need to buy them) a simple winch mount I say that it will still take less time to make than,....

look up the part, call VPW, place the order, wait several days for the piece to come in(holding up progress on other things while waiting), paint the new piece, make any adjustments to the new piece(holes don't line up exactly etc.), and then put it on.

As well I got no satisfaction from buying something that I am well capable of building and have the time and tools to do it.

I also don't think that buying tools should be looked at as though it adds cost to a "project". If you are going to own old vehicles and work on them yourself you're going to need them for many jobs not just one.

Also I did'nt suggest that you go to the "scrap yard". I said go to the "steel yard" or "my scrap pile". You should get a good piece of steel at the steel yard and I personally know where the stuff in my scrap pile came from and know the quality of it.

I guess personally I would just get more out of it by building it myself rather than just picking up the phone. Then later admire someone elses work every time I look at the front of my PW.

I am at the firehall today so I don't have a VPW catalog with me but I will double check that one in the morning. I could have been looking in an older one or just overlooked the part. I HAVE been wrong before.
