I would suggest that if Dave hasn't already done it, he should check the shear pin and make sure it is correct and hasn't been replaced by someone before him with a bolt.
And I can also agree that broken chain links flying through the air are a lot worse than broken shear pins. I have pulled a lot of firewood logs out of the woods here and have broken cables, chains and even straightened out 3/8" cable hooks.
