The early fuel tanks had a small filler, and it was difficult to get fuel into theses things at a suitable rate. Early 3/4 WC's had the small filler (like my Command Car) with a plain tube, but later ones had a bigger filler cap and bowl, with a vent tube return externally so you could ram the fuel filler pipe right down and it would still vent.
