The spare was standard on the door starting somewhere in the M37B1 production run. It was retrofitted onto the doors of many earlier M37's.
The M43 Ambulance and the M53/M56 chassis/cab trucks always had the spare on the door. There are a few minor exceptions with prototypes and foreign orders.
My 1951 M37 has the spare in the bed.
