The extra part you found sounds like the o-ring which goes between the master cylinder body and the residual pressure valve. This valve looks like a small strainer, and sits way up inside the body, just behind the brake line port. This valve keeps minimal pressure on the wheel cylinders so that the seals do not collapse and admit air into the system. Have you been able to remove this valve? Is it still in the master cylinder? I'm not sure now necessary the valve is. I know that most guys who install disc brake sets usually remove this valve so that the pads don't rub when the brakes are released.

If you have already taken this part into account, it may be that the #1 kit also fits another master cylinder which uses this part, or it could be a stray which does not belong there in the first place.
