They came in the D-400 on up trucks..Most are just a direct in 5th version..OD was availible on these trannies, but, like the IHC T34 trans they are next to impossible to find..they are out there tho. For the most part, busses had 4 speeds because seeing that most busses were govt orderd, the govt vehicles normally are as stripped down as you can get to save cost etc. Well anyhow if and when you do get a NP 540 OD, dont get one with a broken input shaft!!! Input shafts on those trannies are No longer avalible (from what a HD truck trannie specialist told me) so one with a broken shaft is good for parts only. Ever heard of a Clark 280VO? That was a fairly common HD and MD truck trans from the '50's thru the mid 80's. Alot of Military "Duce-N-A-Half" trucks have those Clark 280 VO OD trannies. Good luck!
