Actually I tend to think there are FEWER chemicals in today's gas, not more. No lead, less stabilizers, no Metha-nirta-whatever that was getting into the water supplies. I notice the aftertaste is not so bad, and goes away a lot faster. It all makes me wonder if the refiners are having to filter/refine some of the gunk out that they used to leave in. Or maybe the ethanol just goes better with the mixer they use today?

Anyhow, If I had $500 worth of gas, I'd drain it into an open bucket, so I could see any water in it, then pour it into my daily driver, at a 50% mix, and see how it runs. I've been amazed at what seems to burn well, no matter how funny it smells or the color/opacity.

Then, the question is, what is he to do with his empty tanks? Re-fill and add stabilizer?

Stabilizers are BHT, the same thing as in breakfast cereal packaging. Does stabilised gas taste like cardboard?
