When inspecting the valves on the flathead 230 prior to adjustment, I noticed that several of the "self-locking" tappets are loose on the lifters. In other words, the tappets spin freely by hand in either direction on the mechanical lifter, no wrench needed. This can't be good for maintaining adjustment of the valves. Do I need new tappets, new lifters or both? If new lifters, what is involved in replacing them? Do I have to remove the head, or worse? I have replaced valves before, but never the lifters. Thanks.
