We used chalk in the machine shop, for tapered shank drill chucks and such. And, paper has more friction than rubber, plus, in this case, one wrap would add some thickness to the tubing.

The one borrowed kit I used for a double flare slipped, and made a crooked flare. I suppose I need to use the concept I use for welding band saw blades- test, reweld, test, reweld, test, reweld. Annealing is a PITA. I ended up with a lot of 12 inch hack saw blades to get a dozen band saw blades.
