A friend of mine is a body shop guy and he has clear coated both his old trucks and that has done a lot for them in the way of protection. The paint on both old trucks was in pretty good original condition. Use a light buffing or cutting compound to remove oxidation and then clear coat it.
I use WD40 with great results. It seems to clean the paint and get rid of the old rust/muck the paint sweats out. It also repels water pretty good. It does attract dust as your kerosene will probably do but washing and wiping it down a few times year has done a lot for my 47. If I can get my fenders cleaned up I may have my friend clear coat my 47.
