It seems like it would be tough to fit it between the tranny and engine, since you've got to have an input shaft that goes into the crank, has splines for the clutch, etc, and then you have to couple the output to the tranny input shaft. Obviously, a good machinist can make anything, but it'd be way easier to put it after the tranny. The other advantage I could see is that you'd essentially have a rear-facing PTO you could use to run a hydraulic pump, generator or rear winch, though the speed would probably be higher than a regular PTO.

Along the lines of hooking gearboxes up backwards, I have an old lathe that came with a speed-change mechanism made out of some old transmission hooked up backwards. An electric motor drove the output shaft of the tranny, which was mounted on a bracket behind and above the lathe, the input shaft was belted to the a pair of grooved belt pulleys welded around the original flat-belt stepped pulleys. The shift lever was bent over and down so the machinist could reach it easily. I never tried it, but apparently somebody used it for a long time and thought it was okay.
