Hi Dave, As I understand it and as I have used the exemption it does not have to be registered as a historical vehicle. I have never done that unless I wanted to. I have registered it as I saw fit to use. You are just exempt as a collector vehicle that is 25 years or older not a regular user vehicle . Most of what this was about at the beginning was to keep the vehicle ID in the computer so that you won't have to have it reinspected to verify the ID numbers again. The issue is confusing as that is to the benefit of DMV. I just don't give into them as most will. I just point out the exemption as it is there and ask for a supervisor if I run into a road block. You choose the manor in which you wish to register it. Historical, as a regular truck or camper, etc. Again here is the important aspect of the law........

Legislative Findings

5050. The Legislature finds and declares that constructive leisure pursuits by California citizens is most important. This article is intended to encourage responsible participation in the hobby of collecting, preserving, restoring, and maintaining motor vehicles of historic and special interest, which hobby contributes to the enjoyment of the citizen and the preservation of California's automotive memorabilia.

Added Ch. 753, Stats. 1975. Effective January 1, 1976. Has to be researched at the Law Library. Assembly bills are not on line for before 1985

Respectfully, Jackson
