My 67 chevy has the gas tank behind the seat. I think it was common. The good thing about putting it there is that it's much less likely to get damaged in a collision or from dragging it on rocks and stumps. It's probably the safest place in the truck in terms of protecting the tank. The bad thing is that if it does get damaged, so will you.
