The bushing wears, then the armature rubs on the inside of the field cores. The excess drag loads the starter so bad that other parts fry. I have done temporary repairs by adding a folded match book cover into the outer side of the starter, between nose cone and starter body. That moves the 'rear' away from the cores and lets it spin without friction.

Bushings are available at auto parts and hardware stores. Pound the old one out with a hammer and a socket, install a new one, and maybe hone it with sandpaper wrapped around a dowel in a drill motor. That, and solderinng in some new brushes and you'll get another 100,000 miles out of it.
