They sell two sizes of shear pins which change the rating of the winch. THe early ones had a small pin and had a lower rating. Later winches went to a larger pin and a higher rating. The winches are absolutly the same except for the shear pin hole. You can drill out the hole for the larger pin if you like.

Do not use a grade 5 or 8 bolt in place of the pin. One winch I bought was so bent due to someone doing that. All the teeth on the bronze gear were bent over and riped out of the gear. The winch frame and bumpers were bent 30+ degrees downward and the end support was badly bent as were the front and back cross members. I was able to repair it nicely and it is on my ffpw.

My carryall had a winch on it when I bought it that was totally blown apart as it had a grade 8 bolt in it and it failed at the bronze gear. The gear split in two and fractured the case and all heck broke loose from there.

In Reno I talked with a crane rigger. He said 7/16 is fine but to use 27-6 cable. The more wire in it the better as the cable become more flexable with the additional wire count as each wire is smaller. He stated don not use the 19-6 wire as it is too stiff. Also he said to use only all wire cable not the one with the hemp or paper as a center core. The cable with the more wire costs the same as the 6-19 cable.
