Salt mines are really interesting. Back in the mid 70's, I had the opportunity to visit every underground salt mine in the USA. I was working with an engineering company that had a contract with Uncle Sam to evaluate a lot of mines to see which ones might be used for oil storage.
The salt mines in the midwest, like the one you were in, all have low roof heights. They use smaller mine equipment. The salt mines in the salt domes along the Gulf Coast, have rooms from 40' to 100' high. They use large mining and earthmoving machinery in them.It has to be cut into pieces, lowered down the mine shaft, and then reassembled. Working at the salt mines was one of the most interesting jobs I ever worked on. Glad you got to go see one first hand.
