That looks like a self excited alternator to me. The battery post appears to be connected to the field terminal for excitation.
I would question why you need the starter current to run throught the amp gauge as it will peg the needle each time you start your truck and possibly kill your gauge. Starter current should run direct from the battery through the solenoid (provided your truck has one) to the starter.
