Lowe's (here we go again) has a computer system that correlates security camera pictures taken of the people at the checkout with their purchases. I know that because somebody I know gave a handyman her credit or debit card to buy stuff for some project at her house, and later on found things charged to the card that weren't what he should have been buying. She went back to the store and they took her to the security room where they could pull up the photos of the person who had used her card, at which point she easily identified them. I'd be amazed if all the big-box stores didn't do the same thing. Of course it would be a little harder to correlate a cash purchase but if the software's any good they could still search for everybody who bought a certain SKU or a certain combination of SKUs within a certain range of time.

I usually buy ammo over the internet using my credit card, because it's considerably cheaper. I know "they" can figure out that I bought it, but it's a perfectly legal product so I'm really not concerned. If I was concerned I'd pay a little more and pick up a few boxes here and there from various mom & pop hardware stores whenever I was traveling, or go to a gun show and buy case lots for cash. Personally, I think it might go better for gun rights if gun owners would be just a little less paranoid and ashamed and would go back to hanging a rifle over the fireplace or on a gun rack in their truck, and maybe even a pistol from their belt. If more people got used to seeing guns in common situations, they might loose the mystique of being evil gangsta assault weapons. It seems like more and more, people buy and store guns and ammo with such paranoia that they treat them like porn or dope, to be bought for cash where nobody's watching and then hidden away where no one will know you have them.
