So what would you do about the spool of cable? My hook would rip my winch apart if I let it spin. One thought was to pull off a bunch of cable so it was spooling it back on as you were using the capstan, but that seems like a bad situation too. Having the winch spooling cable out as the capstan was pulling in would work, if you had a person to keep the cable pulled out, otherwise a big birds nest would be the fruits of your labor.
If your cable did not fill the drum, and your hook would lay flat, a canvas cable cover could be used to bundle the hook in so it could spin around.
Anyway, those were the thoughts tossed around, but I am sure it was a simple thing as capstans were used a lot "back in the day"
