I do essentially what Marty describes. I use a 2x6 slid through the window openings in the doors, or if there were no doors, just through the cab, positioning it forward, just as he said. The ends stick out.
I use a tractor loader and nylon slings that go down to the dimension lumber. The cutting edge of the bucket is parallel to the 2x6. I don't know that I would use one, but I suspect a good 2x4 would work, too.
No cantilever in this method.
The only other thing I might do if I was nervous about paint would be to put some cloth on the wood beam.
