I had the same problem, and it was the mechanical pump that needed to be replaced.

It would run fine for a few minutes, (and would run forever at idle) but as soon as I got out on the road, and up to "highway speed" (HAHA) it would start to sputter and die.

Does pulling the choke out seem to cure the problem, momentarily?

Try putting in an electric fuel pump, and bypassing the mechanical one, temporarily.
That will tell you if it's the pump. NAPA has two diferent ones, both very similar. One is correct, and cost me around $30.00.
