I was cruising along on Highway 34 west of Loveland CO and a truck pulling a horse trailer pulled partially into my lane partially into the acceleration lane(he was swinging wide to avoid a vehicle at the corner being worked on, I think). Anyway, I stabbed the brakes on hard and was along for the ride in an instant when the front passenger side tire blew out and then the rear passenger side too. The Chieftain ended up upside down over the edge of the road toward the river(opposite of the road). I wasn't hurt beyond little stuff but it did in the Chief beyond my ability to fix. I'd had this car for 15 years, built it up from a $25 parts car into a driver. I was sad to see it go.

The tires were BFG Radial TA. Over 50% tread remaining. They also were 10 years old and 'dry rotted'. I was given a ticket by CSP officer for bad tires. I won't be easily convinced to ever run old looking radial tires again and the manufacturers' own warnings as to the life of a tire I will take seriously.

Just my own anecdote on the subject...

Ken
