I can't tell from your post below if you found the problem or not and I don't know anything about the overdrive unit that you have, however....
Back in the day, clutch adjustment would make a big difference in transmission performance. An adjustment with too little throwout bearing contact might allow engagement in 2 & 3 but not in 1st (granny) or reverse. If the symptom occurs again you might look into that as a possible cause.
