That's pretty close, the article I was reading said that oil company profit is currently about 23 cents a gallon, or just under 8% profit. When you consider that furniture retailers make about 120% and big box retailers make about 20%, the oil companies are at the low end of the profit chain. What makes their gross profit numbers seem outrageous is the incredibly large volume of sales, not the amount of mark-up.
The government makes almost 18% profit per gallon, double what the oil company makes, so when people complain that Exxon made 35 billion last year, consider that the government made 70 billion off of that same sales volume.
