Were they the 1-cylinder model? I've read the starting procedure once through now, and it does sound pretty complicated. There's priming involved, and you have to find the right spot on the compression stroke, in addition to setting the compression release and maybe some other stuff too. I bet that in the real world, you have to use ether. I googled up "Hatz diesel" and they are still in existence, but their website appears to provide no information unless you have a "dealer login". They may be dogs, but apparently they convinced the air force to buy some at some time in the past. That's too bad because I was starting to think of things I could do with a small, economical, diesel motor if I removed it from the pump.
