I've givin up on towing most people for that reason. You assume all the liability and risk for a good deed. I would rather call a tow truck and stand by until it arrives.
I've also ruined many a good water ski day towing disabled boats back to the marina. I now just tell them that if there still there on my way back in I won't forget them.
