Start it in first gear, accelerate normally, then, using the skills you learned by driving your crash-box Power Wagon, time the shift points and up shift, pausing in neutral to allow the engine speed to drop before sliding it into gear. Then, when you want to stop, 'blip' the throttle and slip it into neutral, to coast to the stop sign. You will need to shut it off, and start it in first gear again.

The shifter being hot makes me think maybe the clutch slips so bad that it may have cooked things. Or maybe just broke from age? My three-finger pressure plate wore through one of the finger pivot pins, after 100,000. So I drove it home, as above. 428 Ford Cobra Jet in an F-250, easy to start in granny. That 12,000,000 pound clutch is what wore through the finger pivot.
