First, take the wire off the sender and see if the gage goes all the way to one end (I forget which). Then touch that wire to a good chassis ground and see if it goes all the way the other way. If so, the gage and wiring are good. Then touch it to the sender mounting flange and make sure it goes just like it did when you touched it to the chassis ground. If it doesn't you have a bad connection between the flange and the tank or between the tank and the chassis. If it does, then the trouble is in the sender. As I've mentioned before, I've had ongoing intermittent problems with the sender arm not making good contact with its pivot point, which I permanently solved by soldering a small, flexible, coiled wire between the arm and its support.
