There are a few things out there that engineers cant explain, but it's not because a lack of engineering understanding. The obelisks in Egypt, the pyramids in South America, the giant stones in Mexico. No one knows how it was done (greased logs, sand pits, locks/canals), but IF they did, it would be easily verified by engineering methods. The biggest "engineering mysteries" might better be called "historical mysteries".

As far as the hammerbeam roofs, it in an engineering marvel, not a mystery.(Not to be confused with the great book, "Marvels and Mysteries of our Animal World") They were the best looking truss system anyone could come up with at the time. Difficult to build, but very good looking and easily explainable by elementary engineering.
