I'm just starting on a clutch job on my 7U series D4 cat. It's been needing it for a while since I have the clutch tightened all the way down and it still slips under heavy load, but the first time I tried to use it this spring one of the levers the pushes the pressure plate broke and now it won't disengage. I was very lucky to be able to force it into gear and limb back to the base with it. An old pony-motor cat isn't something you want to just shut down and the start in gear. Fortunately this is the "newer" 7U series cat which has a hatch cover over the clutch, so according to the manual I should be able to get down in there and remove the clutch without separating the machine. A friend of mine had to do a clutch job on an old D2 some years ago and they had to separate the machine. Even on that "little" D2, it took lots of big wrenches, overhead hoists, and assorted "persuaders" to get it apart.
