The 203 is a range box with a diferential attached to it and is chain driven . The 205 is gear driven . I have 2 high , 4 high , neutral and 4 low locked . 4 low locked eliminates the diferential feature. I have not checked out the rebuilt one but assume that it was the same . I purchased the 203 to create a doubler for my NV4500 . That changed when I traded my gasser NV4500 for a diesel one.
The cummins 205 comes with 29 spline male shaft and a sleeve that slides over the imput shaft from the trans. I know of a tow truck that welded one of these sleeves to a diferent one with a different spline count . They have yet to brake the sleeve. The adapter from the 205 to the trans is quite long and uses the figure 8 pattern on the 205 end and the standard round pattern on the trans end . If you got your hands on a round pattern chev transfercase it might be possible to mate it to the 727 without the adapter, but this is real iffy .
Most of the guts interchange between 205s but the output shafts do varie . Ford used a married as well as divorced 205 . All the fords are driver drop . The dodge are pas drop.
