I seem to remember that prior to lacquers they used many coats of slow-drying oil enamel, buffed down between coats. I can attest to thee durability of rustoleum and good adhesion to most surfaces, but I didn't know you could get such a nice finish with it (with lots of work). I wonder if it would be possible to clear-coat a rustoleum finish to keep it from getting dull.
