When making a claim for whatever you're insured for. I've found that it is best to hire a private adjuster. These guys are highly skilled at making insurance companies step-up when you want to use the coverage you've been paying for. This is especially true when you and the other party are insured through the same company.
It's always a good idea to keep your insurance updated.
