It's a long story, but the yard remediation thing is part of the Bunker Hill smelter superfund site. They've been going around testing the dirt in everybody's yard and if it has too much lead (most likely from old lead paint flaking off of old houses or from lead arsenate insecticides that people used to spray all over their yards, but they blame it on the smelter) then they have contractors who dig up the top foot of dirt, haul it to the official poisonous dirt repository, put filter cloth down, and then put new dirt on top, thus making it safe once again for children to crawl around in the yard and eat the dirt. But the whole thing is limited to removing lead-contaminated soil, I highly doubt that they'll remove my old oil tank as part of the operation, but the last thing I want to do is ask them, and then have them make note of it in the rather thick file that they compile about each yard they remediate.
