GM went to IFS in 1988. Those front ends had substantially larger tie rods. Some time around 1999, the front end was redesigned to the smaller rods. So it's 1999 to present. The truck in question is a 2001. I started to pull up TSB's for Chevrolet/GM tie rods but there were so many TSB's that I was bogged down after 10 minutes I stopped searching as most of the TSB sites are pay for use. There is also quite a bit of chatter on the various truck and GM forums sites about it, but that is anecdotal information, suck as "Jack was tired of breaking the IFS frontends under his past Chevy trucks, so he ordered up a solid axle conversion kit from Off Road Unlimited for his '06 Duramax-equipped 2500 crew cab shortbed".
