On most motors, an upside down thermostat will almost overheat before it opens, then cool down, and then almost oveheat, repeat....

But it may not on yours, depending on the bypass water set up. If you have a heater hose going to the water outlet, the hot water from there will heat up the thermo almost normally.

Flat heads have delicate heads/gaskets. I would run a 160 if I could find one. Unless I lived in a c-c-c-cold place and needed the heater to work like a blast furnace.
