Diesels work different from gas engines- the air is always wide open, you control speed by metering the fuel. So at idle, plenty of unburnt oxygen is passing through the engine. In Josh's case, enough to keep a squirrel alive. But if a welder were to use a diesel exhaust to purge the O2 out of a tank for welding, he might have a bomb in the works...
