Mike,
The best thing to do is to bring a Firefighter into a school or club environment where there are other children.
(They boost the confidence of one another)
Introduce the Firefighter and let the children see and touch the equipment as well as ask questions. After 10-15 minutes have the Firefighter slowly put all the gear on.
Then have him slowly interact again with the children.
Stickers might sound like a good idea, however, they discolor in heat, peel off, and may not be visible. Also, there is nothing you can do with the sound of Positive Pressure Breathing Apparatus which is the "Darth Vader" association that children are so afraid of...It is something they need to identify with prior to the chaos of a fire situation.
