The 318 was a disdplacement used on two different engines. Until 1966, the 318 was a polyhead engine like the 277,301,303 that was used and this was called the "A" engine. In 1967 U.S. production was a 318 called the "LA" engine although through the years, the "L" hasn't been used much. This engine looks like the 273 and later year 340 and 360. The biggest differenct externally besides a narrower intake profile is the valve covers are fairly straight on the sides. The earlier 318 was used one more year in Canadian production vehicles. The valve covers on a polyhead 318 resemble the scalloped covers on a Chevy 348 and they have the bolts going through the center of the cover instead of around the edges.
