Did you rebuild the carb? Are the points set to wide? They should be set at .020 for a dwell angle of 34 to 38 degrees. The timing should be set to about 2 degrees BTDC but it would be okay at TDC.The easiest way to set an initial timing is to bring #1 piston to Top Dead Center and then set the rotor to the #1 plug tower on top of the dist. You can determine TDC by turning the engine over with #1 plug pulled and stick your finger in the hole as the engine is turning, hold your finger down tight, and when you get the compression pop,you have just passed TDC.Stick a Plastic drinking straw down in the spark plug hole and turn the engine in the opposite direction until the piston has come back up to the top,you feel the piston moving with the straw. You have to turn the engine the first time with the starter and the second time with a socket on the harmonic balancer bolt are on the flywheel teeth with a screwdriver.Verify that the timing mark on the crank pulley and the pointer on the timing cover are aligned. After your sure the piston is at TDC turn the distributor to align the rotor with #1 spark plug wire on the dist. Also check the plugs to see that the gap is set to .035. After you have done these procedures you should have an idea of what's wrong,if it is an ignition problem, and it does seem to be that from your description.Hope this helps.
