If your gonna go gas, might as well be a big block, I don't think you will see much in the way of a mileage difference. Research the 6.354 Perkins, it fits, may be a bit more costly to get upfront, but your mileage gain will cover that over time. And you can't beat the reliability.
I like it enough to build a 2nd one, of course I am crazy too.
