The 99 and newer cummins has more valves per cylinder for the almighty argument which diesel pickup has more power. I can't remember if it is 3 valves or 4 valves per cylinder, I'll have to look it up. I am really irritated about the 14.9 mpg I got towing an empty car trailer from ct to nj and back- 65 to 70 mph. my tach was around 2150 most of the trip. if I could get the rpm down around 1700 it would be better.
