It sounds like it is a little late for this advice but you should look into POR-15. It goes on with a brush but when it dries it looks like it was sprayed on. I removed some by bead blasting but it wasn't easy.
I'm not an expert but I believe what you are having applied is very good also.
The POR-15 isn't supposed to chip and you can apply it yourself and not have that extra added expense of paying someone to paint it for you.
I don't think POR-15 has been available very long but would sure like to talk with someone that has used it before.
