That part number is not listed in the "Advance List Of Parts" (D-11112) (from November, 1945), the "Dodge Power Wagon Preliminary Parts List Model WDX" (D11091) (from December, 1945), the (Export) "Truck Parts List Model Codes WDX, FL2-26" [etc.] (WM-4200) (from 1947), or the "Dodge Power Wagon Parts List Model Series WDX" (D-12004) from February 1948).

I find the first listing of 1189 555 in the "Dodge Power Wagon Parts List Supplement Models B2PW, B1PW, WDX" (D-13156) (from October 1949).

It quotes as follows:

8-55-7 LAMP, Tail, Assembly (right for dual installation) (plain lens)...923 795
8-55-7 LAMP, Tail, Assembly (right for dual installation) (Dodge on lens)...580 634
8-55-75 BRACKET, Tail Lamp (right for dual installation)...592 462
8-55-111 ARM, Tail Lamp Bracket (Express only) (right for dual installation)...*1189 555
8-55-111 ARM, Tail Lamp Bracket (except Express) (right for dual installation)...590 998
8-55-266 CABLE, Tail Lamp Extension, Assembly (use with dual installation) (8-55-94)...582 341
8-55-267 CONNECTOR, Tail Lamp Extension Cable "Y" (double) (8-16-8)...689 867

* = Indicates parts not previously listed for trucks

1189 555 is the only number in this section indicated as not previously listed in any other parts list. This does not necessarily mean that this particular part did not exist, and was never used, previous to this particular list. It just means that it never found its way into a parts list. Being that this list is a "Supplement" meant to be added to list D-12004, it could mean that the part was in use when D-12004 was released (February 1948), or that the part came into use sometime after the release of D-12004 but before the release of this supplement in October 1949. This does not necessarily limit the time frame between February of 1948 and October of 1949. The part could very well have been in use before that window of time, was just overlooked, and never found its way into a parts list.

What I find interesting, is that besides 1189 555, there are 6 other part numbers listed in this section (All of them I have shown above). Of these 6 numbers, all are indicated as having been shown in previous parts lists. However, only 580 634 and 689 867 can be found in parts list D-12004 of February 1948. None of the rest are found there. And, none of the 6 numbers can be found in the earlier preliminary parts list and advance list of parts. This leads to the question, had these parts numbers appeared somewhere in older 2WD truck parts lists.

Some of these parts are just that, parts of an assembly. It was not unusual for Dodge parts lists to start out early on listing just part numbers for assemblies. Then, later, adding part numbers for the individual parts making up those assemblies.

But then there is a twist to the plot. I mentioned above that 580 634 is shown in the 1948 list D-12004. It reads as follows:

8-55-7 LAMP, Tail and Signal, Left, Assembly…580 634

So! Now we have a 1948 parts list that lists number 580 634 as a LEFT side tail and signal lamp assembly. And we have a 1949 parts list supplement that lists number 580 634 as a RIGHT side tail and signal lamp assembly. The 1949 list is a supplement, so it by nature supersedes information found in the list it supplements. It looks like someone made a mistake in 1948 and incorrectly listed the right side assemble as a left. That particular parts list does make a point of calling out ALL of the other parts as LEFT.

This all leads me to believe that in February 1948, at least, there was some increasing confusion about right and left taillights and assemblies. Hmmm. Could this be about the time that right side assemblies became available? By the time of the release of the new arts list in 1951 (the one that Eric refers to) this number had become obsolete. A new pickup box with new taillight brackets was appearing on trucks and maybe Dodge figured they had dug their hole too deep on the subject before. In any case, this assembly number is not found in the 1951 list. However, 1189 555 still appears as being in use for: 8-55-111 ARM, Bracket, Right (Express).

I do not know if all of this answers the question or not, but it appears that right side taillights may not have been an option before 1948. Interesting that the mounting nuts were always there in the stake pocket from day one.
