If you are a subscriber to the PWA, you will find a detailed article on this subject in the Feb./March 2004 issues of that publication. It deals with the frame repair and the main x-member in particular but the techneques described are universal.
I would remove the engine for several reasons, not the least of which is that the front motor mount system is based upon the front x-member. So are the fuel line and right headlight wiring harness. With the engine out of the way, a very thorough job of clean up and diagnosis of the entire front end is possible.
