Not a wire, it's a tube.

It's probably cracked, and let out all of the ether that makes it work. Do you remember smeling the ether when you worked aroung the rear head- changing starter, or oil filter, perhaps? Or was it not working when you got it?

You can fix it by soldering on a new bulb from a cheap replacement guage. About $20? You just have to chill the new bulb in the freezer, than cut and solder the two Lines together. Possibly freeze the bulb into a cup of ice? Do the splice where it won't show, near the guage end, under the dash. Remove the whole system before starting, do this kind of fussy work on the bench. You'll need to disassemble the guage later for adjustment. Cut with a fine saw- if you use a pair of wire cutters, you'll need a needle to open up the crushed ends. Use a red crimp electrical butt connector with the red plastic slid off as a splice. It is already tinned. Don't crimp it, or just barely, you do NOT want to crush the capillary tube. You'll want to clean and tin the ends of the capillary tube too. And put some pencil grahpite on/in the ends to keep solder from flowing into the tube.

Then, adjust it to read correctly in a cup of boiling water. You'll need a pair of needle nosed pliers, and some snap ring pliers that work 'backwards' to spread the wire links in the guage until you get it right. 212 is boiling.
