I've gotten away with it too, and I think flat-towing can be safe IF everything is right, the two main things being a dry road and making sure the tow vehicle is heavier than the towed vehicle. When I towed my M37 from Everett to Wallace, my tow vehicle weighed in at just a hair under 6000 lbs with me in it. On top of that, I'd say tow at night, on sparsely travelled roads, and go slowly. I would never tow anything, with an empty pickup, not even a utility trailer full of trash to the dump. When push comes to shove (literally), what counts is more weight on the tires with brakes than on than the tires without brakes. That said, I'd never argue with anybody who says to get a big truck and an equipment trailer with good brakes.
