"Advance" means just that- you are firing the mix before the crank gets to the top, so it has to crank through the pressure caused by the firing. 2atdc to 10 btdc is the usual range.

It's about the only thing that can cause the 'slow crank with ignition hooked up".

Is having the two resisters in series the correct method? Seems unusual. One is adeguite for most systems.
